Unicycle Hockey Youth Team

Ready to be part of the first kids’ unicycle hockey team in Singapore?

Think of unicycle hockey as a cross between ice hockey sans the punch-outs and Quidditch. It keeps you fit, hones your unicycling skills and most of all, is fun. The game is played at both regional and international levels at the Asia-Pacific Unicycle Competition and the Unicycle World Championships and we want to start local competitions.

If you are between the ages of 9-15 and want a totally unique sport you can rave to friends about, join us every Saturday morning!

Time:

9am – 10:30am, Saturday mornings starting 3 April 2010 or when we fill 8 slots.

Where:

Tampines Millenium Court. It’s a 5 minute walk away from Tampines MRT station.  More directions here.

Fees:

If you own a Qu-Ax unicycle, $80 per month

Otherwise, $100 a month

What You Will Learn:

- Skill Level 1 International Unicycling Federation (IUF) Certification

- Skill Level 2 International Unicycling Federation (IUF) Certification

- Unicycle Hockey Basic Skills

- Playing unicycle hockey as a team

- Crossover skills that form the foundation for learning unicycle freestyle

Curriculum:

Students will be expected to pass the IUF Skill Level 1 standard before we will move on to basic hockey skills. We will be conducting the tests at the end of every month and this is included as part of the class.

For students with no prior experience, mastery of Skill Level 2 can take up to 2 additional months depending on the amount of practise. In between drills for the relevant skills, we will also be teaching basic hockey moves to equip them with the know-how to play the sport. Certification for Skill Level 2 will be a bi-monthly affair.

Each class will include drills and mostly short matches where students can expect to improve their unicycling ability as well as their proficiency in unicycle hockey.

We hope to be fielding a team to the next Asia-Pacific Unicycle Games and the next Unicycle World Championships (UNICON) that’d be held in Italy in 2012.

Quick FAQ

What do I need to bring?

We will provide all equipment needed but if you wish to use your own, here’s what we’ll be using

  • Helmet
  • Kneeguards
  • Shinguards (optional if you’d like to bring)
  • Unicycle
  • Ice hockey stick

What prerequisites are there?

Knowing how to ride a bike is a plus. If you don’t, no worries, you’ll just need slightly longer to get used to a unicycle!

Would I be playing unicycle hockey immediately?

No you won’t, unfortunately. If you can already unicycle, we’ll spend a few weeks on drills and basic skills before you’re ready for your first match. If you can’t unicycle, you’ll probably need 2-3 months to learn to ride and to master the basic skills before you’re ready.

Is this dangerous?

Like every other sport, you can expect to take the occasional tumble. We’ll be requesting for all students to have on safety gear to minimalize this risk but don’t worry, if you obey the rules, it is a pretty safe game.

Sunday Fun

npworkshop

We didn’t manage to get any photos from the Bedok session but here’s some highlights from the Ngee Ann Poly sessions from last Sunday. We had lots of kids in the afternoon which was great fun and we caught up with some old friends who turned up.

Here’s a shoutout to everyone who attended the sessions and a big thanks to all who’ve helped! We do hope to do more of these public workshops from time to time so stay tuned.

Mid-Autumn Ride – The Aftermath

The ride was fun, the photos… not so. We took off along Orchard Road, lit lanterns in hand. No lanterns burnt in a spectacular blaze in the process.

Next year, I’ll prepare a better camera lens.
